Kolanian / Hammett - Guitar Duo


Studied at the National Conservatory of Athens with Evangelos Assimakopoulos and Lisa Zoe, and graduated in 1985 with the top award and a special honor for exceptional performance. Since that time, he has attended various special seminars and master classes from distinguished teachers such as Oscar Ghilia and Leo Brouwer.

    Throughout the years he has toured in Europe, Asia, North America, and Latin America, where he has presented to audiences a large part of the classical guitar repertoire. He also regularly takes part in international festivals in Vienna, Milan, Athens, Israel, Cyprus and Yerevan by giving individual recitals or acting as soloist with symphonic orchestras and ensembles of Athens State Orchestra, Thessalonica State Orchestra,Symphonic Orchestra of Greek Broadcasting Corporation (ERT)Camerata Orchestra of Athens, Armenian Philharmonic Orchestra. Iakovos Kolanian and Larry Hammett met accidentally in 2012

on a plane from Athens to Dallas.  Both guitarist were on tour and their seats happened to be next to each other.  “We were friends in less than a minute” Hammett said.  Since that fateful meeting they have been teaching and performing together both in the U.S. and abroad.  Both performers are currently faculty for the summer UnlimitedMusicArts festival in Vizitsa, Greece, and also hold full time positions in their respective countries. “We are very much looking forward to sharing this wonderful diverse program” says Kolanian, which they will perform in the U.S., Canada, Greece, Spain, and Armenia.

Is currently coordinator of guitar studies at The University of Oklahoma. He is a recognized expert in both classical and jazz guitar. He has been performing professionally since the age of 16.  His teaching career began in 1982, when he became one of three select students to teach guitar at Montana State University while studying with Christopher Parkening.  He joined the University of Oklahoma faculty in 1991 and currently directs one of the most successful guitar programs in the country.   

Mr. Hammett’s recordings and compositions are aired worldwide and he gives over sixty performances annually both as a classical soloist and with his jazz trio.  He has performed and / or given master-classes in France, Mexico, Argentina, Greece, Spain, Serbia, and throughout the United States. With his diversity, Mr. Hammett is equally at home performing a guitar concerto as he is improvising over jazz standards at a late night jazz session. In addition to his busy schedule, he also participates regularly as a Lutenist with Dr. Gene Enrico’s Collegium Musicum and accompanies the Flamenco Dance class for the University of Oklahoma School of Dance.  Please visit his website for more information.
